List of Sweet Spices

Monday 7 June 2010 - Filed under Uncategorized

In trying to cut back the amount of sugar that goes into your diet you lose a flavor profile. Now spices will not sweeten like sugar but can add a sweet flavor to your recipes.

Most of those spices that fall into this category of sweet spices are used in baking.

Allspice

Anise

Cinnamon

Cardamon

Cloves

Ginger

Mace

Nutmeg

We can also add at least one herb to this list which is Sweet Basil. This herb sweetens sauces up nicely.

I think I have described these spices elsewhere in this site and if not I will cover them in another article. Sweet Spices can add the flavor profile missing when you pull out sugar from your recipe’s and can help cut carbs and calories.

I like the list, but I’m sure there’s more than that that can be considered sweet spices. Atleast there are spices that give a similar effect like Mint. Aside from the obvious use or taste, sometimes I’ll go by smell and the ones that(such as Majoram) smeel like they could be sweet often add them to unlikely things to alter the taste such as meats.
